We understand that many British travellers may have an ongoing medical or dental condition, but unfortunately pre-existing medical conditions cannot be covered.
As part of our insurance coverage, we will assess any medical-related claim which may include verifying:
The following can help determine if you, your travel companion, a close relative or someone upon whom your trip depends has a pre-existing medical condition. If any of the following exist at the time you buy your policy, start your trip, extend your policy or resume your trip, then it is considered a pre-existing medical condition:
Any medical or dental condition, or related complication that has required or is awaiting medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, prescribed medication, consultations, check-ups, surgery, tests or investigations in the 180 days before you buy or extend your policy or book your trip (whichever you do last).
Don’t forget, if you had symptoms of a condition or were undergoing investigations for it at the time you bought your policy, we consider that to be a pre-existing medical condition.
Change in health after purchasing your policy?
If you experience a change in health at any time after you bought a policy, such as a new or increased medication, any referral for tests or a specialist appointment, received or awaiting results of tests/investigations or a new diagnosis/course of treatment, you will need to be able to provide medical confirmation from your General Practitioner that you were fit to travel in the event of a claim.
Read this article – Am I covered if I’m pregnant? – for more information on pregnancy cover.
Also be aware that any medical claim submitted will have the policy excess applied per person, per event.
The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not. You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion cannot be removed, and you will be responsible for any related costs.
For information on travel insurance providers that offer cover on PEMC, visit the Money and Pensions Service (Money Helper website, or call 0800 138 7777).
